Abstract
The $A^{1}\Sigma^{+}_{u} - X^{1}\Sigma^{+}_{g}$ fluorescence of the sodium molecule has been excited in a heat pipe by a Medium power He-Ne laser (85 mW av.; Spectra Physics, Model 125). The spectra are recorded in the region 5800-8500 $\AA$, both photographically (3.4 m Ebert) and photo electrically, with an emphasis on observation of higher vibrational levels in the X state close to the dissociation limit. Four series of P and R branches are observed. Two of them ($v^{\prime} =14, J^{\prime} = 45; v^{\prime} = 16, J^{\prime} = 17$), previously $observed^{1,2,}$ are extended further in the infrared to include at least 15 additional ground state vibrational levels. The other two, which are observed for the first time, originate from higher $v^{\prime}$ and $J^{\prime}$ levels of A state ($v^{\prime} = 22, J^{\prime} = 86; v^{\prime} = 25, J^{\prime} = 87$) and extend to higher values of $v^{\prime}(v^{\prime\prime} \geq 44)$ than the first two. From the known X and A state $potentials^{3,4}$ and the dipole transition $moment^{5}$, the relative intensities of the observed branches are calculated and compared with the photoelectric spectrum. The above results and the results of additional experiments in progress will be reported.
