Abstract
The Fourier Transform Spectrometer constructed by Brault and co-workers at the McMath telescope on Kitt Peak has been used with a long path White cell, on Loan from JPL, to obtain spectra of the visible wavelength transitions of $CH_{4}$ and $NH_{3}$ at unprecedented resolution and signal-to-noise. A comparison with recent Jupiter and Saturn spectra (Smith and Smith, 1978, and Cochran and Smith, 1978) indicates the effects of temperature on the bands. Line strengths derived from the measurements are used to improve estimates of planetary abundances of the two gases.
