Abstract

The high power of lasers enhances the Raman effect so that low sample concentration is not a limiting factor. Two colinear lasers are used to produce the inverse Raman absorption spectrum of molecules. Experimental and theoretical correlations between the ordinary Raman scattering cross-sections and the inverse Raman absorption strengths are presented. Various applications of this nonlinear Raman effect are discussed. Some similarities and differences between this and two-photon absorption are critically examined, and an experimental scheme to distinguish the two is presented.
