Abstract

The microwave spectrum of 3,3-difluoroxetane has been observed in the region of 8-38 GHz Rotational constants were assigned for the first seven vibrational states of the ring-puckering vibration. The variation of these constants, together with the vibrational level spacings as determined from far infrared data and from microwave intensity information, permits estimation of the ring-puckering potential function. It was found that the barrier at the planar configuration is very small, $<$$10 cm^{-1}$, and that the molecule is planar in the ground state. The rotational constant variation, intensity information, and the inertial defect support this argument. The dipole moment of the molecule was found to be 0.40$\pm$0.01 debye.
