Abstract

“A search for electronic Raman transitions in the Pr3+ ion in PrCl3 has yielded ten lines, which have been assigned as transitions from the ground Stark level of the 3H4 state of the free Pr3+ inn to; (i) three other Stark levels 01 the 3H4 state; (ii) rive Stark levels of the 3H4 state; and (iii) two Stark levels of the 3F2 state. The frequencies and the polarizations of these lines are in agreement with the known energy levels of the Pr3+ ion. During the course of this work the frequencies of five (one Ag, one E1g, three E2g) of the six Raman-active vibrational modes of crystals of both and PrCl3 and LaCl3 were also determined. Only une Ag mode escaped detection.”
