Abstract

“A search for electronic Raman transitions in the $Pr^{3+}$ ion in $PrCl_{3}$ has yielded ten lines, which have been assigned as transitions from the ground Stark level of the $^{3}H_{4}$ state of the free $Pr^{3+}$ inn to; (i) three other Stark levels 01 the $^{3}H_{4}$ state; (ii) rive Stark levels of the $^{3}H_{4}$ state; and (iii) two Stark levels of the $^{3}F_{2}$ state. The frequencies and the polarizations of these lines are in agreement with the known energy levels of the $Pr^{3+}$ ion. During the course of this work the frequencies of five (one $A_{g}$, one $E_{1g}$, three $E_{2g}$) of the six Raman-active vibrational modes of crystals of both and $PrCl_{3}$ and $LaCl_{3}$ were also determined. Only une $A_{g}$ mode escaped detection.”
