Abstract
The advantages and disadvantages of dielectric films, thin metallic films, and metal mesh as the dividing plate of a far infrared Michelson interferometer is discussed. A Michelson interferometer using a dielectric splitting plate has been used with success by $Gebbie^{1}$ in the far infrared. An interferometer is described here using a metal mesh dividing plate and its performance is illustrated in the 100-300 microns wavelength region. It is proposed that the interferometer be used as an interference modulator in an infrared spectrometer. The use of the interferometer in the measurement of the index of refraction of thin sheet material is illustrated.
