Abstract

The emission spectra of $TbCl_{3}$ in the $DMSO-CCl_{4}$ system exhibit a very small decrease in the intensity of the bands at $488 - 1 nm(^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{6}$), 544 $\pm$ 1 nm ($^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{5}$) and at 585 $\pm$ 1 nm ($^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{4}$) as the ratio [$CCl_{4}]/[DMSO]$ increases. For $TbCl_{3}$ in different degrees of hydration, i.e., $TbCl_{3}$ $TbCl_{3} \cdot 3H_{2}O$, $TbCl_{3} \cdot 6H_{2}O$ etc., the decrease becomes progressively less significant for the band at 544 $\pm$ 1 nm, and at higher degrees of hydration one may observe a slight increase. The ratios $(^{I}F)_{544} \pm 1/(^{I}F)_{488}\pm 1\propto(^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{5})/(^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{6})$ and $(^{I}F)_{544\pm 1}/(^{I}F)_{585\pm 1}\propto (^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{5})/(^{5}D_{4} \rightarrow ^{7}F_{4})$ decrease with increasing $[CCl_{4}]/[DMSO]$ ratios. Similiar effects are observed in the absorption spectra and for $TbCl_{3}$ in the $DMSO-CHCl_{3}$ system. The effect of the environment upon the electronic transitions with $\Delta$J 0,1 and 2 will be discussed.
