Abstract

Bands containing narrow Q branches have two ``linear law” regions, one for the P and R branches and one for the Q branches. Extrapolation procedures for such bands require very accurate measurements at very small reduced path lengths. This is particularly true of perpendicular bands of linear molecules, where half the intensity is found in an extremely narrow spectral interval. A simple expression in terms of tabulated functions is derived for the absorption coefficient of a Q branch, and it is shown how this may be used to correct absorption measurements in order to obtain the true band intensity and line width. The $15\mu$ band of $CO_{2}$ is discussed as an example.
