Abstract

The boron flame bands which have been known for many years have been observed in the flash photolysis of $BCl_{2}:O_{2}$ mixtures. Under these conditions the bands are sharp and it has been possible to carry out a rotational analysis of many of them. The analysis shows, in agreement with the recent work of Kashan and Millikan, that the bands are due to a lincar symmetric $BO_{2}$ molecule and not $B_{2}O_{2}$. The strong visible bands result from an A $^{2}II_{u} \mbox{---}X^{2}II_{g}$ transition but B $^{2}\Sigma^{+}_{u}\mbox{---}X\; ^{2}II_{g}$ transition has also been observed near 4070 {\AA}. Spin orbit and Renner parameters have been evaluated for both $^{2}II$ states.
