Knowledge Bank

The boron flame bands which have been known for many years have been observed in the flash photolysis of $BCl2:O2$ mixtures. Under these conditions the bands are sharp and it has been possible to carry out a rotational analysis of many of them. The analysis shows, in agreement with the recent work of Kashan and Millikan, that the bands are due to a lincar symmetric $BO2$ molecule and not $B2O2$. The strong visible bands result from an A $\mathrm{<mrow\; data-mjx-texclass="ORD">2</mrow>}IIu---X2IIg$ transition but B $\mathrm{<mrow\; data-mjx-texclass="ORD">2</mrow>}\Sigma u+---X2IIg$ transition has also been observed near 4070 {\AA}. Spin orbit and Renner parameters have been evaluated for both $\mathrm{<mrow\; data-mjx-texclass="ORD">2</mrow>}II$ states.
