Abstract

This paper encapsulates observational and research findings of the impact that light to moderate strength training exercises in the form of dance movement can have on neurological degenerative conditions in the form of Ballet technique. Through interviewing and observing the program curriculum of the Healing in Motion Dance organization in Salt Lake City Utah, which is a collaborative group of dancer and Physical Therapy students from the University of Utah, I have discovered three main themes. These themes include improved kinesthetic awareness, stability, and cognitive function with the implementation of dance-centered exercise practice. Overall, this paper identifies the health impacts dance can have on memory, fitness level, and overall health within all ages and genders. This paper is paired with a live demonstration of these research topics embodied in a contemporary self-choreographed dance solo.
