Abstract

The reflectivity of $KTaO_{3}$ has been measured from 2.5-500 microns $(4000-20 cm^{-1})$. Two slightly temperature-dependent modes and one highly temperature-dependent low-frequency mode were observed over the temperature range $10-450^{\circ}K$. Substantial agreement with Cochran's ``soft'' mode theory was found with this mode obeying approximately $\omega_{T}(T) \propto \epsilon_0 (T)^{^{1}/_{2}}$. The supposed second order Raman spectrum was measured as a function of temperature and found to be surprisingly strong and complex.
