Abstract
The infrared spectrum of nitrogen tetrasulfide, $N_{4}S_{4}$, has been obtained in Nujol mull, and in solution over the spectral region 250 to $3500 cm^{-1}$. The Raman spectrum of nitrogen tetrasulfide was obtained in a .02 molal solution in dioxane. These data, plus the small dipole moment reported in the literature indicate that nitrogen tetrasulfide is a molecule having $D_{2d}$ symmetry. Further consideration of these spectra, plus the infrared spectrum of nitrogen hydrogen sulfide, obtained in nujol mull, show nitrogen tetrasulfide to have a cage structure containing single N-N and N-S bonds. This structure is supported by a normal coordinate analysis, on the basis of which a complete assignment of frequencies has been made.
