Abstract

The report discusses the refinement of computational formulas and the gravity data necessary to obtain geoidal heights to ±10 cm accuracy. Methods for taking into account the effects of the atmosphere, of the topography, and of the ellipticity of the reference surface are given. Emphasis is on appropriate refinements of Stokes' formula, using gravity anomalies, and of least-squares collocation, using data of different types. The determination of the sea surface topography from gravity disturbances is also investigated. Finally, requirements on absolute and relative gravity data and on their distribution are outlined.
