Abstract
Methane is known to be a significant constituent of the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, as well as the Saturnian satellite Titan. Infrared and visible spectra of methane in these atmospheres have been measured from the Earth and from space. Future observations promise higher spectral resolution at longer wavelengths. This research will explore spectroscopic opacities corresponding to conditions of temperature and pressure appropriate to these astrophysical sources.
