Abstract

The thionyl-aniline (ThA), R-N = S = O, prepared condensing the amines with thionyl-chloride are generally coloured in the yellow shades. The AA. have recorded the u.v. absorption spectra. The phenyl-thionyl-aniline presents the band of aniline, and also one band in the 320 $\mu$ region, lge-4: the latter is shifted towards the red by some substituents (Me, Alg, OR....) and the intensity remains about of the same order of magnitude: In the case of p-nitro-derivative the spectrum is practically similar to that one of p-nitro-acetanilide. The AA., considering also the results on dipole moments and on the chemical behaviour, formulate the hypothesis that the ThA are in a highly dipolar state.
