Abstract

The informal term "Crab Orchard Chert" has been erroneously applied to the Silurian Crab Orchard formation of Garrard Co., Kentucky (DeRegnaucourt and Georgiady 1998). Field work has identified the material, which was extensively used in prehistoric time, as silicified stromatoporoid bodies weathered from the Reba limestone member (Ordovician). Similar occurrences in Tennessee and New York are also described.
