Abstract

Measurements of the emissivity of gas samples containing $CO_{2}, H_{2}O$ and $N_{2}$ have been made in the $2,000-10,000 cm^{-1}$ region $(1-5 \mu)$ with a spectral resolution of approximately $5 cm^{-1}$. Temperatures from $1200^{\circ}K$ to $2000^{\circ}K$ have been used, and sample pressures have been varied from a few mm Hg to more than one atmosphere. The average emissivity over certain spectral regions has been related to the temperature and to the partial pressures of the different gases present. The experimental apparatus, particularly the furnace and gas handling system, will be described briefly, and many of the data will be shown and discussed.
