COLLISION BROADENED LINE WIDTHS AND THE EFFECTS OF CORIOLIS INTERACTION ON THE LINE STRENGTHS OF THE $3339 cm^{-1}$ BAND OF $CO_{2}$

Abstract

The collision broadened widths and absolute intensities of more than forty lines in the $13^{1}$0-000 band of $CO_{2}$ have been measured with a spectral resolution of $0.029 cm^{-1}$ to estimated accuracies of 3 and 5\% respectively. The line width measurements were made with a pathlength of 34 m to get appreciable absorption of this weak band and at pressures from 1/2 to 3/4 atm. The widths were measured directly and corrections were made for both the slit function and the overlap. The line widths show a decrease with rotational quantum number from $0.110 cm^{-1}$ $atm^{-1}$ at line R(6) to $0.073 cm^{-1}$ $atm^{-1}$ at lines R(52) and P(52). The intensity distribution in this band is highly unusual due to a strong Coriolis interaction. An analysis of the measured line strengths showed that the present data do not support the use of a single value for the Coriolis interaction parameter for the entire band. It was found, however, that if separate values for this parameter are used for the P and R branch, respectively, an entirely consistent set of data results. A discussion of these results will be presented.
