Abstract
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has proved very useful in the spectroscopic study of absorbing centers. We have extended the technique to the investigation of very small magnetically induced circular differential emission. Experiments have been conducted as a function of the frequency through a number of fluorescent lines. The apparatus involves a piezooptical birefringent modulator and a phase sensitive detector. The basic theoretical expressions used to explain MCD still hold. The observed diamagnetic and paramagnetic terms lead to the diagonal matrix elements of the magnetic moment. Off diagonal terms are also encountered. The technique allows in particular the study of high-lying ground state sub-levels. Preliminary results through the $^{5} D_{0}\rightarrow^{7} F_{2}$ line of $Eu^{3+}$ in various chelates will be discussed for illustration. Finally the method is of potential value for the investigation of electron paramagnetic resonance in excited states.
