Abstract
Bands of the $b {^{1}}\Sigma_{g}^{+} - X{^{3}}\Sigma_{g}^{-}$ system of $S_{2}$ have been excited in a discharge flow system by reacting ground state $S_{2}$ molecules with metastable $O_{2} (^{1}\triangle_{g})$ molecules. The 0-0, 0-1 and 1-1 bands have been recorded in emission with a Bomem interferometer, together with the 0-0 band of $^{32}S^{34}S$. The rotational structures of the bands are determined by magnetic dipole selection rules. Detailed analysis has yielded accurate values for the molecular constants of the $b {^{1}}\Sigma_{g}^{+}$ and $X {^{3}}\Sigma_{g}^{-}$ states. The rotational line intensities are well reproduced by the line strength formulae of Watson. Bands of the $b 0^{+} - X_{1} 0^{+}$ and $b 0^{+} - X_{2} 1$ systems of SeS have been excited in a similar manner. In the 0-0 band, four electric dipole and three magnetic dipole branches have been found. Relative magnitudes of the two electric dipole and one magnetic dipole transition moments have been determined. Molecular constants have been determined for the five isotopic species $^{30}SeS, {^{70}}SeS, {^{76}}SeS$ and $^{77}SeS$.
