Abstract
The water quality of springs, contrary to public opinion, is often poor. Springs carry a higher risk of contamination than
other groundwater resources. As the need for water increases, springs may be a viable source. However, due to their potential
for contamination, springs may be too costly to use as a large scale resource. An example of biological contamination and the
cost involved in treating spring water is evident at Crystal Spring in Newark, Ohio. This spring had to be abandoned primarily
due to treatment cost.
