Abstract

Catalytic decomposition of $NH_{3}$ on polycrystalline Pt surfaces has been investigated in the range of 300 to 1400 K using the laser-induced fluorescence technique to monitor production of free radicals such as NH and $NH_{2}$. NH was found to desorb from the Pt surface at catalyst temperatures above 1200 K. However, $NH_{2}$ was not detected at all catalyst temperatures studied up to 840 K. This result indicates that the Pt-NH species, instead of the $Pt-NH_{2}$, is one of the stable intermediates in the $NH_{3}$ decomposition on Pt. The activation energy for NH desorption was determined to be 66 kcal/mole. The effects of added $H_{2}$ and $D_{2}$ were also studied. Detailed discussion of these effects will be made in terms of a proposed decomposition mechanism.
