Abstract

Using a plane-grating time-resolved spectrometer, operating in an off-plane Ebert configuration with the camera mirror rotating for photographic detection and in an in-plane configuration for photoelectric detection, optical transients on the order of $5 \times 10^{-8}$ second can be resolved and studied in high-voltage spark discharges and other repetitively pulsed plasmas. In oscillatory sparks, it has been possible to photograph spectra in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions corresponding to gap breakdown and channel formation, electrode erosion, and plasma collision reactions. In addition to their fundamental value, such studies are of importance in spectrochemical analysis. The discussion here will stress our current understanding of spark discharges and the extensions being made into analytical emission spectroscopy.
