Abstract
I examined the effects of HIV/AIDS in the lesbian community, a topic rarely addressed in Women’s Studies or the lesbian community. I analyzed how the medical community has responded and addressed this issue with a focus on how women who have sex with women are taught safe sex, prevention, and awareness. I focused on the invisibility of women who have sex with women to the medical community and the efforts made by the lesbian community to gain access to information and treatment.
I intended to analyze the risk of woman to woman transmission as well as the common myths associated with transmission and infection of women who have sex with women. I also examined how the lesbian community has responded to HIV/AIDS through activism, education, and outreach, including a history of the lesbian community’s involvement with the initial HIV/AIDS crisis, all critiqued with a feminist perspective.
