Abstract

Liquid and solid phase infrared and Raman spectra of the novel compound, 1,1,2,2-tetrabromocyclopropane (TBCP) have been recorded for the first time and interpreted in detail. Based on the spectroscopic information, such as Raman depolarization ratios, the $C_{2v}$ symmetry of this molecule has been confirmed. The assignments of the 21 normal vibrations of TBCP have established both ring and methylene cyclopropane group frequencies. A comparison of the spectral results for TBCP and the similar molecule, 1,1,2,2-tetrachlorocyclopropane (TCCP) has shown excellent correlation in frequencies due to similar vibrations. No such correlation has been observed for 1,1,2,2-tetrafluorocyclopropane undoubtedly due to the strong vibrational coupling in this latter molecule.
