Abstract

The mid-infrared spectra of Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, Tb, Th, and U oxides vaporized from tungsten or iridium Kundsen cells between 1700 and $2200^{\circ} C$ and isolated in argon matrices have been obtained. Vibrational assignments have been made on the basis of oxygen--18 isotope frequency shifts and intensity ratios. Calculations of the oxygen-metal-oxygen bond angles indicate linear structures for $CeO_{2}, PrO_{2}$, and $UO_{2}$, and a non-linear structure for $ThO_{2}$. Measured intensity ratios of these and isotopically substituted molecules agree with predicted values to $\pm 10\%$. Analyses of $EuO_{2}$ and $TbO_{2}$ spectra are in progress.
