Abstract
Raman optical activity (ROA) provides a means of probing the vibrational perturbations of optical activity to give detailed information about the structures of chiral molecules. Identification of some of the structural information which is readily available via ROA has been a goal of our work with 2-halobutones and with 1-substituted-2-methylbutanes. We have shown that the optical activity of individual conformers can be observed with selected vibrational modes in these molecules. The ROA results for these and several other related molecules will be discussed in terms of vibrational assignments from both the literature and from our Raman and infrared observations.
