Abstract

The molicular cations $Cu^{+}_{2}, Ag^{+}_{2}$, and $Au^{+}_{2}$ were generated in neon matrices at 4 K by simultaneous laser vaporization of the appropriate metal and open-tube neon discharge (16.8 eV) $photoionization.^{1}$ The ESR apectra are all of $S = 1/2$ species exhibiting hyperfine splittings due to the $^{63}Cu(I = 3/2) {^{107,109}}Ag(1 - 1/2)$, and 197 $Au(I = 3/2)$ nuclei. Variations in the hyperfine and g tensor components in the series are interesting and will be discussed. Comparison will be made with other, less gas-like, $environments^{2}$.
