Abstract

“It has been suggested that the metal-nitrogen bonds in the metal-chelate compounds of $2,2^{\prime}$;-bipyridine and related compounds have partial double bond character because of resonance involving $d \pi-p \pi$; bonds. Therefore, it is highly desirable to obtain information on the strength of the metal-nitrogen bonds from the infrared spectra. The stretching force constants of the metal-nitrogen bonds obtained from the analysis of the vibrational spectra would be useful for this purpose. Thus a normal coordinate treatment, has been made on the simple 1:1 complex model of $\alpha$-diimine metal chelate. [FIGURE] Later, more rigorous calculations were made on the 1:3 complex considering all the interaction between the ligands.”
