Abstract
This project will explore issues of the representation of Brazilian favelas in cinema, and put these issues in discussion with the recent incursion of “slum” tourism in Brazil. It will claim that there is a need for the representation of cultures, often marginalized by society, like the Brazilian favelas, and discuss the ways that the representation of ethnic cultures can, and should, be shifted and reframed. Ultimately, the project will work to flip the “gaze” back onto the viewers who, dominantly, hold a “gaze” on the less privileged members of society, revealing our role, and apparent complacency, in systematical exploitation through media and tourism.
