Abstract
“Biacetyl exhibits appreciable singlet-singlet and triplet-singlet emissions in the gas, liquid, and solid states. We have determined these intensities in a number of solutions. The singlet-singlet intensity increases with solvent viscosity and reaches a limiting value at high viscosity. The relative emission intensities from singlet and triplet excited states permit estimation of the effect of solvent on the various radiationless (internal conversion) and radiative transitions. The applicable data bearing on these transitions are summarized.”
