Abstract
Although the spectroscopy of $benzene^{1}$ has been extensively studied, little spectroscopic information exists for the alkyl-substituted benzenes. Excitation spectra have been recorded with a continuously-operating supersonic expansion of alkyl-substituted benzenes excited by a nitrogen laser-pumped dye laser. The spectroscopy and excited state photophysics of this chemically-important class of molecules is discussed, with particular emphasis on the effect of lengthening the alkyl chain.
