Abstract

An optical probing method has been used successfully to measure the kinetic energy released onto fragments in dissociative charge exchange of $H_{2}^{+}$ tons with cesium. By monitoring the laser induced fluorescence of the Balmer beta atomic line $(n=2 to n=4)$, specific molecular fragmentation to the $H(1s) + H(2I)$ or higher dissociation limits was investigated. The spectrum exhibits several peaks and a clear break at 1.9 eV. Predissociation of $n=3$ Rydberg states is invoked as the dominant contribution Also for MLarzilliere: Laboratoire de Spectrometrie lonique et Moleculatre, Associe au CNRS, Universite Lyon-I 69622 Villeurbanne Cedex FRANCE
