Abstract

Rovibrational transitions of solid deuterium in the $3 \mu m$ region were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Spectra of solid ortho enriched and normal deuterium have illustrated a variety of interesting phenomena of collision induced absorption in solid $state.^{1}$ Observed transitions were assigned to be the U branch $(\Delta J = 4)$ of the fundamental band of deuterium. In addition to the previously observed $U_{1\leftarrow o}(0)$ $transition,^{2}$ we observed the $U_{1\leftarrow o}(1)$ transition. From the experimental integrated absorption intensity, the transition hexadecapole moment was determined using the analytic expression of Poll and $Tipping.^{3}$ The effect of $J =1$ paradeuterium on the intensities and linewidths of the transitions will be discussed
