Abstract

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra will be reported for a number of $d^{10}s^{2}$ systems including Tl(I), Pb(II), Sn(II), Bi(III) and Sb(III) in various solutions and as dopants in alkali halide crystals. Attention will be focused on the two strong absorption bands in the ultraviolet arising from the transition $s^{2}\rightarrow sp$. Spin-orbit coupling is considered explicitly and the results indicate a strong quenching of the orbital angular momentum in the excited states. This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
