Abstract
An extensive FTIR isotopic study using deuterium and carbon-13 substitutions has been made on the vacuum uv photolysis products of acetylene trapped in argon matrices at 8 K. Absorption bands have been observed corresponding to several vibronic bands of the $A^{2}\Pi \leftarrow X^{2}\Sigma$ transition of $C_{2}H$, which have recently been reported in studies on this radical using color center laser $spectroscopy^{1-2}$. Isotopic shifts are reported for these bands as well as others attributed to $C_{2}H$. The behavior of the band at $1846 cm^{-1}$ on isotopic substitution, is consistent with its previous assignment by $Jacox^{3}$ to the $\nu_{3}, C-C$ stretching vibration; however, the effects of carbon-13 substitutions on the band at $3610 cm^{-1}$ do not support its earlier assignment to the $\nu_{1}$, C-H stretching vibration. Isotopic data on an absorption at $2104 cm^{-1}$ suggest that it may be a $\nu_{2} + \nu_{3}$ combination band, which would imply an unexpectedly low value of $-260 cm^{-1}$ for the $\nu_{2}$ bending vibration.
