Abstract

Background: Healthcare work-related stress is on the rise. The lack of formal training and preparation for leaders to manage and support acutely-stressed staff necessitates a strategy to formally train leadership to become more confident and effective in intervening with acutely stressed staff. Objectives: This DNP prepared Nurse Executive evaluated changes in leadership confidence based on an early assessment of exposure to the THRIVE leadership training intervention. Specific content to the formal evidence-based THRIVE training includes: (a) The foundation of support based on learning to listen well; (b) Assessing employee work-related stress to identify the type of stressor and associated support needs; (c) Principles of emotional first aid and critical incident stress relief, and knowing when to refer to other resources. The THRIVE leadership training focused on training leaders in how to support their direct report staff who have experienced an acutely stressful work-related event. Methods: This quality improvement evaluation used a repeated measures survey design with 115 leaders at a Pediatric hospital who have direct staff member reports. The data was analyzed to assess individual change over time in confidence levels by comparing mean scores using a paired t-test for pre-training/post-training comparison. Changes from pre-training to Session 1 post-training were also examined for individual items in the confidence measure, to evaluate early in-training changes in various areas of confidence for providing support for acutely-stressed staff. Findings: The overall sum score change in confidence from pre-training to post-training was statistically significant, t = - 14.185, df = 112, p < .001, with pre-training and post-training means scores of 34.08 (SD = 10.91, n = 146) and 46.95 (SD = 8.58, n = 113), respectively.
