Abstract

An experimental set up for the study of the kinetic Raman spectra of transient species produced in solution by high energy electron pulses has been developed at the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory. The p-aminophenoxyl radical has been examined as a model system. This radical exhibits an absorption peak at $\sim 440 nm$ and decays by the diffusion controlled processes $(2k \sim 2.5\times 10^{9} M^{-1} \sec^{-1})$. The Raman spectrum of p-aminophenoxyl was obtained 150 ns after the termination of a $1 \mu s$ electron pulse. The initial radical concentration was estimated at $\sim 3 \times 10^{-5} M$ and halflife at $\sim 13 \mu s$. The observed Raman spectrum and its kinetic behavior will be discussed.
