Abstract

A correlation has been established between the frequencies of isotopically isolated OD oscillators of HOD and the difference between the symmetric and antisymmetric frequencies of isolated $D_{2}O$ molecules in lithium salt hydrates. This correlation has been shown to be particularly useful in the analysis of the spectra of lithium salt hydrates containing asymmetrically bound water molecules. The correlation is compared with a similar correlation developed from hydrates containing other metal cations, and the differences have been used to elucidate the nature of the effect of cations on water frequencies in general.
