Abstract

Lifetimes and magnetic moments of individual rotational levels of the $V ^{1}B_{2}$ state of $CS_{2}$ are reported. Rotational states from a number of vibrational leves are studied. The measurements are carried out in a supersonic jet and Zeeman quantum beat techniques are used to measure magnetic moments. Results on some of these levels have previously been reported by Ochi $et. al.^{1}$ These authors, however, did not take account of the biexponential nature of the fluorescence decays. The shorter lifetime component corresponds to discrete emission while the longer one corresponds to continuum emission. Only the short component shows quantum beats. For each rotational level the g-value, discrete lifetime and continuum lifetime are reported. Values for rotational states in vibrational levels previously unanalyzed are reported. The g-values range from 0.002 to 0.04. Such values are very large for a singlet state and are probably due to perturbation by a nearby triplet state(or states). An interaction model is proposed and the extent of mixing is estimated.
