Bust-length portrait of Johannes Stark, against a dark background. The text at the bottom reads "Johannes Stark, Ph.D., 1874-1957. Nobel Laureate 1919. He and Philipp Lenard, also a Nobel Laureate, did not accept relativity and quantum theories. Each believed only Aryan science was valid. Stark wrote: 'In Adolph Hitler, we German natural researchers perceive and admire the savior and leader of the German people. Under his protection and encouragement, our scientific work will serve the German people and increase German esteem in the world." A first-state impression [CMA 2001.034.401] has hand drawn embellishments on the text and an appliqué "OLPH" over what was presumably the alternate spelling, Adolf. The misspelled version of the word "perceive" was fixed for the final impressions.
