Abstract

Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure is commonly referred to as a “problem play” due to its tragic themes, yet comedic ending. This essay strives to explore one of the cruxes of the play giving it this name: Isabella’s silence. By using past scholarship, the written play itself, and three modern productions, this essay discusses how the different interpretations of Isabella’s silence follows feminist commentary even with their vast differences. Furthermore, this essay does not attempt to prove that any of the productions themselves are feminist works, but rather how each of them can be used to discuss feminist politics and commentary solely through one character, Isabella, because of the need for readers, directors, and viewers alike must interpret her actions, words, and wishes carefully as she does not give direct information to how she is feeling unlike other Shakespearean characters.
