Abstract
The heteronuclear alkaline earth dimers CaMg, SrMg and SrCa have been synthesized in rare gas matrices and their chemically bound excited states characterized by their electronic absorption ion spectra. Argon and krypton ion laser and cw dye laser excitation resulted in structured emission for CaMg and SrCa and an unstructured band for SrMg, thus providing dada on the Van der Waals ground states. Vibrationally unrelaxed fluorescence is observed for CaMg. In addition, heteronuclear dimers composed of different Group II B atoms or mixed Group II A and II B atoms are reported on the basis of absorption studies. These new species include ZnCd, ZnHg, CdHg, MgZn, MgCd, and MgHg. The properties of the mixed dimers are compared with those of the corresponding homonuclear molecules.
