Abstract

The Raman and infrared spectra of the 1:1 addition complexes between trimethylamine and iodine, bromine, iodine monochloride and iodine monobromide will be presented and analysed. Two low frequency bands observed in each complex are assigned to the halogen-halogen and halogen-nitrogen stretching vibrations. Force constants, calculated for a linear model provided by X-ray studies, will be discussed and compared to the force constants between halogens in the free halogen and interhalogen molecules and polyhalogen ions. The vibrational spectra of the complexes will also be compared with the spectrum of trimethylamine pure and in aqueous solution.
