Abstract

The Raman and infrared spectra of asymmetric-dinitrogentrioxide ($O_{2}NNO$) at $12^{\circ} K$ in a nitric oxide matrix have been recorded and analyzed. The assignements for this molecule have thus been clarified. Asyo-$N_{2}O_{3}$ is stable in the matrix when 488nm excitation is used but other species including symmetric-dinitrogentrioxide (ONONO) are formed when red excitation (647.4, 676.2 or 750.2nm) is introduced. These species are converted back to the asymmetric $N_{2}O_{3}$ by 488nm radiation. Use of $^{15}N$ and $^{18}O$ isotopic substitution was helpful in characterizing the species and for assigning their spectra.
