Abstract

Contrary to our $expectation,^{1,2}$ the precision of the line parameters retrieved from simulated spectra of a single Lorentz line are not proportional to the SNR of the data over the range from 30 to $10^{6}$. This behavior is caused by the nonlinear models which describe the data and by nonlinear correlations between the parameters. The results can be understood by considering simplified problems. The implications of these results to the design of experiments in quantitative spectroscopy are discussed. These analysis can be applied to other types of problems.
