Abstract

Introduction: The Magnet Recognition Program® enables healthcare organizations to create a culture of engagement and nursing excellence. Evaluation of need is a critical step for strategic evaluation and appropriate implementation of such programming. The objective for this project is to assess the pediatric hospital nurse managers' level of perceived performance in healthy work environment (HWE) practices aligned to the Magnet Recognition Program. Additionally, responses are crosswalked to the Nelson and Burns High Performing Program (HPP) model in order to identify strengths and opportunities for NM improved performance in HWE behavior. Methods: This DNP project is a two-part descriptive needs assessment conducted via REDCap of the inpatient and ambulatory nurse managers' self-reported level of performance in healthy work environment (HWE) behaviors aligned to the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet® Model components at a large pediatric hospital in the Mid-west. Results: Nurse managers were invited to participate (N = 93), with 43 completing all components of the needs assessment. From the Magnet components as classified by HWE behaviors, NM reported high-performing rating for 3 areas (care delivery systems, accountability/competence/autonomy and culture of safety), proactive rating for 4 areas (staffing/scheduling/budgeting, interdisciplinary care, ethics/privacy/security/confidentiality, and quality care monitoring/improvement), tied for high-performing, and proactive for diversity/workplace advocacy. The professional practice model was rated at the responsive level overall. Conclusions: Findings across the Magnet components indicates room for education and growth. Identifying the current state of nurse manager perception of HWE behaviors in their areas has never been more relevant in promoting and sustaining high quality nursing care.
