Abstract

Using the technique of electric deflection in a molecular beam, CCl., CF., and SiCl, have been observed to be polar in the $v_{3}$ excited vibrational states. The polar behavior results from a vibrationally induced dipole moment possible in certain types of degenerate vibrational states. This interpretation is confirmed by the dependence of the polar behavior on temperature and on isotopic substitution of the chlorine atoms.
