Abstract
Dr. Elaine Hairston is the Chancellor Emerita of the Ohio Board of Regents. When she was named in 1990 Hairston was the first woman and youngest person ever to be named Chancellor. Hairston earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees and her Ph.D. at Ohio State University in the late 1960s. She recalls student unrest and protests against the Vietnam War on campus. As associate Director of Affirmative Actions Programs Hairston worked to include women in the Ohio State University Marching Band and to create a child care center on campus. In 1984 she took a part-time position with the Ohio Board of Regents and advanced to Vice Chancellor for Academic and Special Programs, and ultimately Chancellor. Hairston saw herself as a "change agent" at Ohio State, and also at the Board of Regents. Her accomplishments as Chancellor included integrating the two-year campuses into the planning sessions; creating child care centers at every public college that wanted one; the Selective Excellence programs; expansion of technical colleges into community colleges; stronger support for minority and Appalachian students; and the development of OhioLink
