Abstract

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) is one of several related nonlinear Raman techniques which owe their existence to the laser and are now successfully being exploited for combustion dianostics. The advantages of these methods include: high signal strengths, coherent output (which discriminates against certain interferences such as luminescence and partial incandescence), etc. Despite the disadvantages such as complexity, reliability of the laser sources, cost, etc., techniques are currently providing information inside of internal combustion engines and in sooty combustion. A comparative overview of these methods, a list of accomplishments to data and a future prognosis will be discussed.
